The ‘Woke’ Left’s Authoritarian Pandemic Power Grab

By February 25, 2021

By J. Peder Zane for RealClearPolitics

COVID-19 is our first woke crisis.

The global pandemic is the excuse the left has been waiting for to vastly expand its control. Power brokers in government, the media and corporate America have consistently invoked often-shifting science, which must never be questioned, to impose coercive policies that diminish individual freedom while increasing dependence on government.

None of this is new; the left has been at it at least since the Progressive era in the early 1900s. To some degree an expansion of government authority was an inevitable and necessary response to the global pandemic.

But taking a step back, it is clear that the left has used this temporary crisis to turbo-charge and entrench a radical ideology that represents a vast and divisive transformation of our politics and our national character.

The forces they are unleashing appear ascendant, and so COVID-19 is providing a window into America’s unsettling future, which includes these elements.

Government knows best, so shut up: The left simply wants control. Their ideological justification for this is that they ought to run things because they are smarter and better than everyone else.

During COVID they have insistently claimed they were following the science to justify their power-grabbing policies. Let’s be clear, science is the most powerful tool humans have created to understand and tame nature.

But science is not a book of absolute truths; it is the story of the never-ending quest for better answers to hard questions. It works because it has the freedom to change as new data and discoveries emerge.

That, for instance, is why we no longer rely on leeches to treat everything from epilepsy to gout.

Such flexibility is anathema to authoritarians, whose power rests on their claims of infallibility.

During COVID-19, governments have imposed a series of onerous policies – overly broad lockdownsschool closuresmask mandates – with questionable positive impacts. I’ll be the first to admit that reasonable arguments exist for all these measures, and most government interventions.

The problem is the extraordinary effort to silence meaningful debate about these complex issues.

The people are children (Part 1): The response to COVID has been defined by the robust efforts of local, state and federal governments to control personal behavior.

The underlying assumption of broad mask mandates and economic lock downs is that individuals are incapable of assessing their levels of risk, of deciding whether it is safe for them to go into work, eat at a restaurant, work out at a gym, so the government must decide for them.

The people are children (Part 2): Some Americans have protested government policies that have injured their pocketbooks and health while infringing on their individual liberty, but the larger story is that most citizens haven’t raised a peep even as lock downs have threatened their children’s education (and futures) and destroyed their opportunity to make a living.

As Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff detailed in their seminal book, “The Coddling of the American Mind,” the rise of the welfare state, helicopter parenting, and the politics of grievance have destroyed traditional notions of personal responsibility.

Americans increasingly believe both that someone else is responsible for their problems and that someone else should solve them. This has created a conformist policy of assent that makes people willing to do what they are told, no questions asked.

Bread without circuses: In addition to legal actions, threats and public shaming, the deeply indebted federal government has sought to silence dissent to its questionable policies by doling out trillions of dollars it does not have.

Today, they buy our assent; in the future they may, as in China, just demand it.

The real inequality: COVID has exposed the growing divide in America between the powerful elites who are largely insulated from the policies they make and endorse and the rest of the people who suffer the consequences.

Lock downs and school closings have had an outsized negative impact on the poor, the young and people of color. Many of the low-paying jobs they’ve lost are not coming back. High earners have been relatively unscathed and many have thrived, thanks to the soaring stock market.

Basically, the wealthy boomers who run the country have been happy to inflict massive pain on the young and poor in the hopes of protecting their own health.

Everyone is the same: It has been clear from the start that the elderly are at far greater risk of contracting COVID than anyone else. As of Feb. 17, 81% of COVID deaths have been among people 65 and older. Just one quarter of 1% of deaths have been among those 24 and younger.

A rational response to the pandemic would have been to isolate and support the subset of imperiled Americans – including rigorous screening programs to ensure that the fragile elderly living in nursing homes do not come in contact with carriers.

Instead, most governments have imposed one-size-fits-all policies that have exacted a devastating toll on hundreds of millions of Americans for whom COVID is no more deadly than the flu.

They have rejected a data-based, nuanced approach because they want to use the crisis to maximize their seizure of power.

Everyone is different: Once the vaccine was developed, most governments temporarily forsook collectivism for social justice. After making sure they got the first shots, our leaders created complex formulas regarding who should come next.

Along with taking the obvious approach – start with vulnerable Americans who are most at risk – they also arrogantly sought to tell us which  jobs were “essential” and which races more deserving.

When the history of COVID-19 is written years from now, only some of the chapters will describe the emergence of the deadly virus and the heroic efforts of caregivers and researchers to contain and vanquish the effects of this lethal pathogen.

Much of it, instead, will show how woke elites used the crisis to fundamentally transform America.

Warning for America: The Four Steps of Marxist Takeover Were Activated in 2020

By Jim Hoft

Back in July 2020 Scott McKay at American Spectator wrote an amazing piece on the Four Stages of Marxist Takeover.

McKay’s report is based on the words and warnings of Soviet defector Yuri Bezmenov.

It’s been seven months since the report was published and the situation today is even more dire than predicted. Even McKay would never have predicted the antics of the Marxist left during the 2020 elections. The Marxist takeover of America is well on its way.

The first goal of revolutionary propaganda, particularly the Marxist variety, is to demoralize. It’s to depress you and make you believe your civilization is lost. Once you succumb to that, you are, in the words of Ming the Merciless, “satisfied with less.” Why do you think ordinary white people are so willing to apologize for the sins of their ancestors and to confess to being racist without even knowing it? Why do you think corporate America is blindly endorsing a Marxist revolutionary organization that openly declares war on the nuclear family?

That’s demoralization, and according to Bezmenov it’s the first step in engineered societal collapse.

Jonathan Cahn’s Prophetic Message to Joe Biden (Presidential Inauguration 2021)

Rep. Stefanik: Now New Yorkers Know Gov. Cuomo

Is a ‘Criminal Sexual Predator’

Lindsey Boylan, a former aide for Gov. Andrew Cuomo, published a shocking piece on Medium on Wednesday detailing a series of alleged inappropriate sexual comments and advances she received from the governor. Her very first sentence reveals that the governor asked her if she wanted to play “strip poker” on a flight home from Western New York. In his New York City office on Third Avenue, she was “shocked” when he “kissed her on the lips.” She said that kind of behavior was par for the course for his administration.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has created a culture within his administration where sexual harassment and bullying is so pervasive that it is not only condoned but expected. His inappropriate behavior toward women was an affirmation that he liked you, that you must be doing something right. He used intimidation to silence his critics. And if you dared to speak up, you would face consequences. (Medium)

Conservatives Launch $2 Million Campaign to Expose

Biden’s Radical Nominees and Dark Money

By Michael W. Chapman

A coalition of conservative organizations, led by three major groups, has launched a $2 million-plus campaign to expose how President Joe Biden’s call for “unity” in the country is questionable given the radical left background of some of his executive branch nominees, who are pushing extreme agendas that mirror the desires of the dark money donors who put Biden in office.

Dark money donations are funds raised by non-profit organizations that are not required to disclose their donors’ identities. As Bloomberg reported in late January, the Biden campaign was backed by $145 million in dark money donations while President Trump received only $28.4 million in dark money.

The three conservative groups — Judicial Crisis Network, Heritage Action for America, and Americans for Public Trust — have launched ads (for cable TV and online) that started airing on Feb. 18.

The Judicial Crisis Network is sponsoring an ad about Vanita Gupta, who was nominated by Biden to be the next U.S. Associate Attorney General, the No. 3 position at the Justice Department. Gupta was the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights in the Obama administration, and the deputy legal director of the left-wing American Civil Liberties Union.

According to the ad, Gupta supports defunding the police, commuting the sentences of people on federal death row, and releasing convicts in federal prisons who are at risk of catching COVID.

“Biden promised unity, but this is a dangerous appointee in a dangerous time,” states the advertisement.

The ad from Heritage Action for America focuses on Xavier Becerra, who was nominated by President Biden to be the next secretary of Health and Human Services. Becerra, 63, currently is the attorney general of California; he served in Congress from 1993 to 2017.

The ad notes that Becerra is not a medical doctor and that in 2000 he helped to persuade President Bill Clinton to commute the prison sentence of a convicted drug dealer. The father of the drug dealer had made political donations to Becerra.

As the House Committee on Government Reform reported, “Congressman Becerra conceded that the Vignalis [family] were not members of his constituency but that Horacio [the father] had been a friend and contributor of his for five years.”

The report specified that Horacio Vignali had contributed at least $11,000 to Becerra’s political action committee between 1998 and 2001, $2,475 to his congressional campaigns, and $3,500 toward his subsequent failed bid for Los Angeles mayor, reported FNC.

The ad further reports that Becerra supports government-run health care and that he sued a group of Catholic nuns, the Little Sisters of the Poor.  Becerra argued that the Sisters must provide contraceptives, sterilizations, and abortion-inducing drugs and devices under the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”).

Becerra supports abortion on demand, wants to decriminalize illegal immigration, and impose more gun control laws.

Becerra is a “radical partisan, an activist, not a doctor,” states the ad.

In a third ad, the Americans for Public Trust discusses how dark money interests may be influencing the Biden White House. The Biden campaign received $145 million in dark money from such funds as Arabella Advisors, the Sixteen Thirty Fund, Majority Forward, and the League of Conservation Voters.

Ron Klain, now Biden’s chief of staff, “led a top dark money group,” the Center for American Progress Action Fund, states the ad.

Gina McCarthy, now Biden’s national climate adviser, is the CEO and president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, which has a dark money NRDC Action Fund, states the ad. That fund reportedly also received money from Arabella Advisors.

Biden, states the ad, will not open America’s public schools because of the resistance from teachers’ unions and their “dark money.”

“From personnel to policy, Biden is just starting to pay back all that dark money,” states the advertisement.

Last week, RealClearPolitics reported, “During his presidential primary campaign last spring, Joe Biden said one of his first priorities would be signing a comprehensive campaign-finance reform bill that, among other things, would force dark-money groups to disclose their donors. But in the first few weeks of the new administration, passing a COVID relief bill to help struggling Americans, along with impeaching Trump, have become the two main priorities set before Congress.

“For now at least, the reform bills have been shunted aside despite Democrats giving them top legislative billing – dubbing them HR 1 and S 1 to signify their importance.”

The Senate confirmation hearing for Xavier Becerra starts on Tuesday, Feb. 23.
